My first co-op surpassed expectations, thanks to supportive colleagues and diverse tasks. Initially nervous, being new to both co-ops and civil engineering, I found reassurance in Carpenter Marty’s exceptional care throughout the semester. I am grateful for the experience.
When I first met with Carpenter Marty, they asked about my interests in civil engineering. With limited knowledge from Toledo, I wanted to experience work with all three of the teams at Carpenter Marty. I began with the traffic group, gaining a deeper understanding of traffic dynamics during the establishment of new housing areas or restaurants.
When working with the traffic group I got to use software I’ve never used before and even got to set up traffic cameras which really begins the whole process. Transitioning to roadway and bridge teams, I used software like Microstation and Openroads. Every task I tackled felt essential to the company’s operations. It was a really good experience for my first co-op.
Besides familiarizing myself with various new software and terminology, I anticipated having numerous questions. My co-workers always answered my questions until I fully understood, even if it took asking it more than once.
Everyone was always super appreciative for the work I turned into them. I am appreciative for the patience they had with me during my time here.
In addition to fulfilling my expectations regarding work, CM ensured that my time outside of work was equally enjoyable. I went to TopGolf, participate in Thumbs Up Thursdays, go to Skyline with some of the guys on Thursdays and even play a round at the OSU course with Shane and Kevin. Engaging in these activities allowed me to better acquaint myself with my colleagues, which is always beneficial for a company.
Overall, this experience has been the perfect first co-op and I couldn’t begin to think about anything I would tell CM to change. Experiencing both the office life of a civil engineer and fieldwork convinced me that I had indeed chosen the right career path and company. I’m so thankful for how well they handled this co-op and how well they have prepared me for my future work and studies. I appreciate them so much for giving me this opportunity to begin with.
