Orange Road Bridge Replacement & Roadway Realignment
The Delaware County Engineer’s Office, through a quality based process, selected Carpenter Marty Transportation to design the bridge replacement for the Orange Road Bridge over the scenic Olentangy River. The existing structure was a 108 year old historic 181’ span Pratt Truss bridge. In addition to replacing the bridge, the improvements included major approach reconstruction and roadway realignment. The project required multiple public involvement meetings and a project website was developed and managed by Carpenter Marty Transportation.
The project was completed in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of the realignment of 0.21 miles of Orange Road and the construction of a new two span continuous steel plate haunch girder on semi-integral abutments and reinforced piers. The bridge replacement required Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) coordination and mitigation due to the scenic designation of the Olentangy River. In addition, State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) involvement was required due to the truss being registered as a historic structure. The new structure is a two span continuous steel plate haunch girder on semi-integral abutments and reinforced piers. The bridge limits are approximately 273’ and the spans are asymmetrical. Aesthetic enhancements included stone form liner to the abutments and piers, decorative railing, and radial wingwalls. Also included in Phase 1 was the upgrade of the intersection of Orange Road with Perry Road (TR 145). Phase 2 of the project included the design of a roundabout at the intersection of Orange Road with Carriage Road (TR 334) and SR 315, landscaping, and roadway drainage improvements. The roundabout converted the two-way stop controlled intersection into a four-leg single lane roundabout with the realigned Orange Road providing the fourth leg. In order to keep land purchases to a minimum, the inscribed roundabout circle was offset from the centerline to minimize impacts to the adjacent properties and keep right-of-way costs low.
