Main Street Bridge Replacement
This project involved the replacement of the historic three span concrete T-beam bridge over Moxahala Creek. The new structure is a three span (37.25’, 54’, and 37.25’) composite box beam supported by 20’ tall wall type abutments with drilled shafts and cap and column piers. An existing water and sewer main were relocated off of the existing bridge by directional drilling under the stream and levee. Moxahala Creek required local floodplain approval since the creek is within a designated floodway (FEMA Zone AE).
The existing structure required State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO) coordination. Carpenter Marty Transportation successfully developed the Existing Conditions Report which included investigations and inspection of the existing concrete conditions, alternatives with cost, and load ratings. The Army Corp of Engineers was heavily involved due to presence of earthen levees. Several stakeholder meetings were required to coordinate bridge and utility construction with the Corps. Additional work included drainage design for the curbed roadway, maintenance of traffic for pedestrians, driveway details, and right-of-way.
