Carpenter Marty Transportation is responsible for the engineering design services of the JAC-C.R. 9-0.12 project in Jackson County, Ohio. This safety project will eliminate an existing at-grade crossing on U.S. 35 by C.R. 9 by constructing a two-span prestressed concrete beam bridge over U.S. 35. The project also includes the relocation of Acy Avenue and Industry Drive, as well as the construction of a modern single-lane roundabout at the existing McCarty Lane and Acy Avenue intersection.
Our team recently visited the site of this project to check in on the progress. The bridge beams have been set and the project looks more and more like the graphic rendering each day. An aesthetic grant was received for the project which allowed for the inclusion of bas-relief images on the bridge abutments which can be seen in the photos. Bas-relief is a type of sculpture that retains the natural contours of figures which allows the work to be viewed from many angles without distortion of the figures themselves. The bas-relief images on this project mark the first time Carpenter Marty Transportation's bridge team have utilized this type of abutment treatment. The images are each approximately 12' tall and 7' wide. They are modeled after the sculptures that can be found in Jackson County's Markay Theater. The aesthetic grant will also allow for decorative railings and form-lined parapets.
