The Jackson County Engineer’s Office, through a quality-based selection process, chose Carpenter Marty Transportation to provide engineering design services for this safety improvement project. The project eliminated an existing at-grade crossing on US 35 by constructing a two-span prestressed concrete beam bridge over existing US 35. CR 9 was realigned and Acy Avenue and Industry Drive were relocated. A modern single-lane roundabout was designed for the existing McCarty Lane & Acy Avenue intersection. McCarty Lane is one of the major access points to US 35 from the City of Jackson and has a high percentage of truck traffic. The roundabout was designed to accommodate this and utilized the maximum allowable inscribed circle diameter, as well as maximum allowable entry widths.
While no pedestrian facilities were constructed as part of the project, each leg had commercial drives near the intersection area that required shortening of the splitter islands to allow access. Full approach lighting was designed for all three legs of the roundabout using conventional cobra-head style fixtures. The project also involved access management, pavement, closed storm sewer system, utility coordination, traffic control, maintenance of traffic, and other minor improvements. Traffic was maintained by various schemes throughout construction. The typical section development for this project included 16 different typicals, and the right-of-way design included 23 separate parcels and 11 owners. Carpenter Marty Transportation assisted in obtaining an aesthetic grant for the project which allowed for the inclusion of bas relief images on the bridge abutments, decorative bridge railing, form-lined parapets, and decorative monument walls.
