Get to Know Greg Johnson, One of Carpenter Marty Transportation’s Bridge Experts!
Greg Johnson has been with the Carpenter Marty Transportation team for fifteen years and has been in the engineering industry for twenty-two. With more than 175 bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects under his belt, Greg is one of our leading bridge designers. He specializes in complex structure analyses along with load ratings, hydraulics, and initial structure type studies.
After receiving a service award this year, Greg noted, “A lot of the faces haven’t changed during the fifteen years I’ve been at Carpenter Marty Transportation, so sometimes it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long. Though, when I look back at the list of bridges we’ve designed, it certainly looks like I have been around for a while.”
Favorite project
Greg’s favorite project so far has been the North Bend Road Bridge Replacement project, HAM-74-14.42, in Green Township. “It was a challenge because of the desire to incorporate unique aesthetic features in a way that was visually congruent. It stretched our imaginations beyond the simplicity of a typical grade separation bridge. The bridge was built, and it looks fantastic! There is some self-satisfaction in seeing projects become tangible and seeing them function properly. I feel better knowing our team does everything they can to prioritize safety and quality on all projects. This made the choice to become a bridge engineer one I’m happy I made years ago.”
Best part of working at Carpenter Marty Transportation
“I don’t like to be complacent by doing the same types of projects over and over. I like to feel a little uncomfortable going into each project in hopes our skill set will be broadened. We (CM) always seem to land the project that pushes us a little harder than the last. It’s what keeps me going. The people I work with are top-notch. I have spent more time with them than my own family at times. Being able to stick together during some stressful situations (work and non-work) evidences the fact we have some extremely impressive people working here at Carpenter Marty Transportation.”
Hobbies
Greg has a sense of adventure and likes to backpack. He and his family have been to Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, the West Coast, New England, and many other scenic locations. If he is not venturing a mountain, visiting a new park, or cheering on his kids at their athletic events, he is likely experimenting with his smoker.
