Employee Highlight- Mike Weeks

Mike Weeks has been with Carpenter Marty Transportation for almost 11 years. Mike’s main responsibilities used to be just roadway plan QA/QC and project management. However, since our survey team is continuously growing, he now manages our field services since he is also a registered surveyor.

Beginning Career

When asking what inspired Mike to pursue a career in surveying he said, “Actually, I never intended to be a surveyor. I graduated with a civil engineering degree and had taken several survey classes, but never thought I would be a practicing surveyor.”

Mike’s first job out of college involved a couple years of boundary surveying experience, this enabled him to obtain his professional surveyor registration. “I am fortunate things worked out as they did.”

Professional Surveyors

Favorite Part about Surveying

If you are from Ohio, you may not know that Ohio has many different systems of original land surveys and performing surveys around the state can result in some very interesting and challenging projects. “I enjoy reviewing historical records and determining the locations of property boundaries.” During his field surveying days he appreciated being outdoors and the physical activity he got from it. When he started working from a desk all day it took some getting used to.

Survey Equipment

Most Interesting Project

In the beginning of Mike’s surveying career, he participated in a very large farm property survey along the Scioto River in western Marion County. “The property was located in the Virginia Military District, so I had to perform research in the archives at the Ohio Historical Society!”

Mike mentioned that some of the original surveyor field books he found has some interesting notations – examples included encounters with an Indian hunting party and a pack of wolves. He also found several Indian artifacts while on the project (flint arrowheads and a tomahawk head).

Life Away from Work

When Mike isn’t at work looking over plans or directing our survey team he enjoys going on family vacations, doing activities with his grandkids, and keeping busy with the upkeep of his 11 acres of mostly wooded land. Mike has to mow around 2 acres of it so he still gets his outdoor exercise every now and again!

Mike would like to go on a trip to Alaska. “A few years ago my wife was supposedly planning a trip with our friends to Alaska, but surprised me with a trip to Italy instead. Italy was a fantastic trip with all the historical sites and great food, but I remind her I still want to go to Alaska someday.”

Advice for Someone Wanting a Survey Career

“Take great pride and ensure thoroughness in your survey work. Your efforts will be used to establish accurate property line locations and will be used as the basis for engineering design plans.”
