Dustin Gohs Employee Highlight

Get to Know Dustin Gohs, One of Carpenter Marty Transportation’s Roadway Engineers!

Dustin Gohs has nine years of professional engineering experience and has been with the Carpenter Marty Transportation team for two years. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and his Master of Engineering Degree at the University of Louisville. Dustin’s experience includes plan preparation and design for roadway projects as well as maintenance of traffic, drainage design, safety studies, and signage and signals layout and design.

Discovering Engineering

Knex

Dustin remembers always being intrigued with building, construction, and problem-solving. He frequently built things with K’nex and enjoyed figuring out how all the pieces fit together. He would even adjust the instructions to fit the way he wanted things built. Towards the end of high school, Dustin realized his mindset in approaching problems was in line with an engineer’s way of thinking, and the rest is history!

Learning Along the Way

Technical skills are obviously learned along the way, but Dustin feels he has also learned a lot when it comes to mentoring too. He was taught different aspects of engineering with patience and from the perspective that others “were in his shoes” at one point in their career. Dustin said the mentality really stuck with him and is something that goes a long way when mentoring other engineers. Dustin has had the opportunity to mentor interns and new engineers over the last few years. He uses his experience and shares information he felt was helpful. “It is all about balance. It is important to allow young engineers to learn where to find things and how to use the resources available to them.”

Best part of working at Carpenter Marty Transportation

Dustin Gohs, MEng, PE

“I enjoy the atmosphere and environment Carpenter Marty Transportation creates within the company. It sounds weird being in the small Cincinnati office, but it doesn’t feel like I’m in a different office most of the time. The communication and engagement with others in Columbus, and even in West Virginia, make it feel like we are working in the same proximity and eliminates the distance between the offices.”

His Professional Goals

Dustin wants to continue learning new things.  “I continually have opportunities at Carpenter Marty Transportation to learn new software, work on projects with new design elements I have not experienced before, and absorb knowledge from others in the company. I want that to be something I am always searching for – to never be satisfied being stagnant with my design knowledge and capabilities.”
