Chase, one of our skilled Survey Technicians in our Columbus office, graduated from The Ohio State University in 2018. He started working with Carpenter Marty Transportation in 2021 and has been with us ever since!
The first project Chase undertook at Carpenter Marty was an exciting endeavor with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). This project was particularly significant as it required Chase to perform a comprehensive scan of an entire building, a task he had never tackled before. The process involved creating detailed models for architects to utilize in their planning and modifications. One of the most fascinating aspects of this project was the scanning and data processing. Despite being unfamiliar with the equipment, Chase approached the challenge with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. The experience of using advanced scanning technology for the first time was both daunting and exciting for him.
One of Chase’s favorite projects to date is the extensive work he did with Mount Vernon SR 13. This project stands out as the largest and most demanding he has undertaken with CM. What made this project particularly special for Chase was the opportunity to manage and execute it almost entirely on his own.
Working independently allowed Chase to thoroughly test his knowledge and push his boundaries. He was up for the challenge of handling complex tasks on his own, which required him to draw on all his skills and expertise. The experience was not only a test of his capabilities but also a chance for personal and professional growth. Successfully completing such a significant project on his own filled Chase with a deep sense of accomplishment and reinforced his confidence in his abilities. This project remains a highlight of his career, showcasing his dedication, resilience, and passion for his work.
Before embarking on his career journey, Chase had never even heard of the role of a survey technician. During his college years, he studied Geographic Information Systems (GIS), acquiring a deep understanding of spatial data and its applications. However, it wasn’t until he began job hunting after graduation that he discovered this intriguing career path.
One of the aspects Chase enjoys most about being a survey technician is the variety of projects he gets to work on. Whether it’s scanning a historical building for renovation plans, mapping out new infrastructure, or conducting topographical surveys, every project offers a unique set of tasks and learning experiences. This diversity keeps his work dynamic and engaging, ensuring that no two days are ever the same.
We asked Chase what his favorite thing about working at CM was and he said, “I enjoy the people and the company culture. Everyone here is always so easy to work with.”
“What is something on my bucket list? Probably skydiving. The thrill of jumping off a plane and free falling would be an interesting and unique feeling I would want to experience” Chase mentioned. Our final question we asked Chase was to give his advice for students looking for a career in surveying. Chase said, “Make sure you know what you are getting into. Fieldwork allows you to see new places and explore the outdoors, but it can be hard work. It isn’t for everyone but can be very rewarding.”
