Trout Run Railroad Bridge

The project consisted of the design and preparation of contract plans and related documents for a new bridge and associated bank stabilization. This was the first rail bridge design for Carpenter Marty Transportation. The existing Trout Run Bridge that carried the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad (DGVR) over Trout Run was washed out during the historic 1985 flood. It was 40’ long and was abandoned in place. The bridge was replaced to the east of the existing location and tied back in the existing termini of the DGVR to the north and south of Trout Run Bridge along the Greenbrier River.

The project required avoidance of any work in and/or disturbance to the waters of the United States. Access to the site was via Hi-rail trucks and trail/rail car from either end. The new structure is a thru-girder bridge with a span of 64’-0” c/c bearings and 22’-0” between the thru-girders.  The superstructure typical section consists of two thru-girders, floor beams, knee braces, and a ballast deck to support the ties and rails.  The abutments are cast-in-place concrete supported by drilled shafts.  Bearing assemblies, anchor bolts, handrail, and all steel details were designed and drafted. Carpenter Marty Transportation received a 4.9/5 rating from the West Virginia Division of Highways on this project. Comments stated that the consultant went over and beyond to expedite the project delivery and provided additional services when the manor of construction delivery had to be altered due to cost.
