Renner Road-Trabue Road-McKinley Avenue Corridor (RTMC) Mobility Study
Carpenter Marty Transportation was retained by the City of Columbus to complete the Renner Road-Trabue Road-McKinley Avenue Corridor (RTMC) Mobility Study as a response to residents’ mobility concerns sparked by existing capacity issues and increased development in the corridor. The RTMC forms a route from the west side of Columbus to Franklinton/Downtown, which is about a 9-mile corridor. It services many communities with a wide range of land uses such as residential, light and heavy industrial, recreational, warehouse, retail, and heavy railroad use. This study analyzed past planning efforts, current/future mobility conditions, public input to identify areas lacking satisfactory mobility, and provided solutions to improve mobility. Solutions included modifications to the transit system, pedestrian/bicycle facilities, and existing roadways, as well as alternate roadway connections.
Carpenter Marty Transportation collected count data, reviewed relevant traffic studies, analyzed demographics, engaged the public, and worked with MORPC to develop traffic growth rates. Carpenter Marty Transportation projected horizon year traffic volumes, completed capacity analysis, and developed recommendations for improvements to the corridor. Recommended improvements largely focused on providing safe, equitable solutions to ensure all users (vehicle, walking, biking, and rolling) have safe and reliable mobility options traverse the corridor including shared-use paths and/or sidewalks and modernizing pedestrian crossing infrastructure. The final deliverable also included concept plans and cost estimates for the recommended improvements.
