The Montgomery County Engineer’s Office, through a quality based selection process, chose Carpenter Marty Transportation to provide engineering design on this improvement of 0.44 miles of CR 166 (Austin Boulevard) by widening the existing roadway from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided boulevard, including full depth pavement replacement. The project also includes the construction of a new bicycle/shared-use path on the north side of the roadway, the widening of an existing prestressed concrete box beam bridge over Holes Creek, maintenance of traffic, right-of-way design and legal description preparation, survey and utility coordination, traffic signal improvements at the intersection of CR 166 and CR 175, and replacement of the existing overland ditch drainage with a closed sewer system. The existing non-composite prestressed box beam superstructure was widened utilizing both composite and non-composite box beams. Widening allowed for two additional 12' travel lanes and the addition of a 6' sidewalk on one side and a 17' bicycle path on the other. The existing abutments and footings were widened to accommodate the widened deck. Turned back wingwalls were implemented to minimize right-of-way impacts. The project also included numerous visual/architectural enhancements including decorative fencing at intersection corners, full landscaping on both sides of the roadway and median including irrigation, colored and stamped concrete sidewalk areas at intersections, pedestrian post top lighting with LED luminaires (all light poles also included hanging flower baskets) and wildflower seeding in the conservation easement area present within the project limits.
