This project involved the structure type study of the rehabilitation or replacement of North Bend Road over IR 74 and included raising the profile of the bridge to allow for the required vertical clearance and providing maintenance of traffic for the two phases of construction. The project included design alternatives including a two span bridge with wide flange prestressed I-beams, a two span bridge with rolled steel beams on mechanically stabilized earth abutments, and the rehabilitation of the existing bridge using LRFD methodologies. The selected alternative consisted of replacing an existing four span continuous steel beam bridge with a two span prestressed concrete I-beam on a cap and column pier and semi-integral wall type abutments. Aesthetic enhancements included form liner, decorative fencing, and lighting. North Bend Road was raised over 1’ to provide the required vertical clearance and the interchange ramps were milled and overlaid. North Bend, ramp, and interstate traffic was maintained throughout construction. The existing traffic signal at North Bend Road and the IR 74 westbound off-ramp was completely replaced as part of this project. The new traffic signal is a span wire design utilizing ODOT strain poles. Pedestrian signals and radar detection were also included with the new signal. Lighting plans were also required as part of this project.
