The Delaware County Engineer’s Office, through a quality based process, selected Carpenter Marty Transportation to design the bridge replacement for the Orange Road Bridge over the scenic Olentangy River. The existing structure was a 108 year old historic 181' span Pratt Truss bridge. The bridge is located in Liberty Township at the intersection of SR 315 and West Orange Road (TR 114). In addition to replacing the bridge, the improvements included major approach reconstruction and realignment. Orange Road is designated as an urban collector route, while SR 315 is an urban arterial, and TR 334 is an urban local route within the project limits. The project required multiple public involvement meetings and a project website was developed and managed by Carpenter Marty Transportation.
The project was completed in two phases. Phase 1 consisting of the realignment of 0.21 miles of Orange Road and the construction of a new two span continuous steel plate haunch girder on semi-integral abutments and reinforced piers. The bridge replacement required ODNR coordination and mitigation due to the scenic designation of the Olentangy River. In addition, SHPO involvement was required since the truss was a registered historic structure. Aesthetic enhancements included stone form liner to the abutments and piers, decorative railing, and radial wingwalls. The bridge limits are approximately 273' and the spans are asymmetrical. Also included in Phase 1 was the upgrade of the intersection of Orange Road with Perry Road (TR 145). Phase 2 of the project included the design of a four-leg single lane roundabout at the intersection of Orange Road with Carriage Road (TR 334) and SR 315, landscaping, and roadway drainage improvements. Complex four-phase maintenance of traffic was required along SR 315 during construction.
